Friday, November 3rd, 2023.- It was an unusual match for the Chilean national team as they played without a designated goalkeeper. Both of their called-up goalkeepers, Christiane Endler and Antonia Canales, had to return to their European clubs early after the FIFA international break.
As a result, coach Luis Mena improvised by placing forward María José Urrutia in the goalkeeper position. Despite not being a natural goalkeeper, Urrutia performed well in goal.
Chile also had only three substitutes on the bench since Camila Sáez and Karen Araya had to return to their clubs as well.
Despite all these challenges, the Chilean team put up a good fight against the Mexican team, who secured the gold medal thanks to a free-kick by Rebeca Bernal in the 29th minute, a shot that left Urrutia with no chance to save.
Despite the adversities faced by the host team, the match was evenly contested. While Mexico sought a second goal, they couldn't break through Chile's solid defense. On the counterattacks, Chile tried to equalize but struggled to convert their opportunities.
With this result, Mexico claimed the gold medal, Chile earned a historic silver medal, and the bronze went to the United States, who defeated Argentina.
