Cuba takes gold and bronze in the triple jump

Lázaro Martínez, with 17.19 meters, secures first place, while his compatriot Cristián Nápoles claims third.

Friday, November 3rd, 2023.- Cuba delivered a magnificent performance in the triple jump event at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, with Lázaro Martínez securing the gold medal and his compatriot Cristián Nápoles earning the bronze.

The gold medalist achieved a distance of 17.19 meters, while his teammate recorded 16.66 meters.

In between them was Brazilian athlete Almir Dos Santos, who jumped 16.92 meters, a distance considerably shorter than the one that earned him a silver medal at the World Championships five years ago. Nonetheless, it was enough to win him the silver medal in these Pan American Games.

Lázaro Martínez, the current world runner-up in this discipline, had a special celebration on the track at the Estadio Nacional as he clinched the gold medal on his 26th birthday.

In the previous Pan American Games (Lima 2019), Cuba also won two medals in the triple jump, though on that occasion, they were silver (Jordan Díaz) and bronze (Andy Díaz).

Chilean jumper Luis Osvaldo Reyes finished in fifth place with a jump of 16.30 meters.
