Friday, November 3rd, 2023.- Chilean sailing team has five opportunities to win medals as they conclude their Pan American participation tomorrow.
After seven demanding days of sailing in various conditions and some setbacks, Chilean sailors have secured spots in five Pan American sailing finals, following the conclusion of the preliminary regattas for the Snipe and Lightning regional classes.
Today, Lightning, led by Felipe Robles, Carmina Malsch, and Paula Herman, secured a spot in the medal race, which is reserved for the top five in each category. Similarly, the Snipe team of Matías and Constanza Seguel also earned their place in the finals.
The national trio achieved two third-place finishes on Friday and ended the qualifying stage in second place, setting them up for a silver medal fight tomorrow.
However, the Seguel siblings are currently in fifth place, with only a mathematical chance to compete for the bronze.
Other Chileans who have made it to the Pan American sailing finals include Diego González in the Men's Sunfish, María José Poncell in the Female's Sunfish, and Clemente Seguel in the ILCA 7.
González will compete for the gold against Canada's Lee Parkhill and Peru's Jean Paul de Trazegnie. Meanwhile, María José Poncell will vie for the silver with Aruba's Philipine Van Aanholtm, with the gold already secured by Peru's Caterina Romero.
In the ILCA 7, Clemente Seguel finished in second place in the preliminaries, but the gold is already assured for Peru's Stefano Peschiera. The competition for the other medals is open between Chile, Independent Athletes, Brazil, and Argentina.
Furthermore, among Chile, Brazil, and Argentina, two Olympic spots for Paris 2024 will be contested in the final race.
