Brea Wins the 1,500-Meters, Secures Her Second Gold at Santiago 2023

The Venezuelan athlete, who had already won in the 5,000 meters, secured victory in the race that concluded the track events at the Estadio Nacional.

Friday, November 3rd, 2023.- Joselyn Brea established herself as one of the standout figures in the athletics competition at Santiago 2023 by securing Venezuela's second gold medal. She won the 1,500 meters race at the Coliseo Central of the Estadio Nacional.

The 29-year-old athlete had already claimed victory in the 5,000 meters final on Wednesday. On Friday, she once again executed a flawless race, clocking a time of 4'11.80 to claim the top spot and the gold medal.

After crossing the finish line, the Venezuelan distance runner celebrated with a group of compatriots, many of whom had gathered in the southern section of the stadium. She then completed a victory lap around the track with a massive flag of her country, receiving applause and affection from the Chilean crowd.

Brea was the first South American athlete to run the 5,000 meters in under 15 minutes and has twice broken the subcontinental record in this event.

In addition to long-distance running, the Venezuelan competes in duathlon, a discipline in which she has won the world championship three times.

The silver medal in the 1,500 meters race at Santiago 2023 went to Cuban athlete Daily Cooper (4'11.86), while the bronze was claimed by American runner Emily Mackay (4'12.02).

Chilean athlete Josefa Paz Quezada finished the race in eighth place with a time of 4'18.92.
