Hyde, who had been the fastest in the qualifying heats, lived up to his status as the favorite and claimed first place with a time of 49.19 seconds.

With this achievement, the Caribbean athlete matched his compatriot Winthrop Graham, an Olympic medalist in the 400-meter hurdles, who also won the Pan American gold in Indianapolis 1987.

At 26 years old, Jaheel Hyde's list of accomplishments includes a youth world championship in the 110-meter hurdles, as well as a bronze and a silver medal at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games. He has now added a Pan American title to that list.

The silver medal in the 400-meter hurdles at Santiago 2023 went to South American champion Matheus Lima (49.69 seconds), while the bronze medal was awarded to former Pan American junior champion Joao Illas, with a time of 49.74 seconds.
