Volleyball: Mexico to Compete for Fifth Place After Victory Over Puerto Rico

The Mexican squad will aim to secure a place among the top five teams at Santiago 2023, after defeating a Caribbean team that couldn't seal the deal in the final set of the match held at Arena Parque O'Higgins.

Friday, November 3rd, 2023.- The Mexican male's volleyball team defeated Puerto Rico 3-2 in an exciting match held at 1:30 p.m. at Arena Parque O'Higgins. Overcoming ups and downs, the North Americans managed to stave off several match points and secure a spot in the match that will determine the fifth and sixth place at Santiago 2023.

The match began in favor of the Mexican team with a score of 25-21 in the first set. Although Puerto Rico responded with a 25-22 win in the second set, Mexico regained the lead by winning the third set 25-21.

The fourth set of the contest was the most hotly contested, as the Mexican team had several match points in the final minutes. The islanders didn't back down and, in addition to saving match points, they pocketed the fourth set with a score of 30-28.

This led to the final set, which unfolded in a similar manner to the previous one. Puerto Rico was able to reach 14 points without major complications, holding several match points, but the North Americans closed the gap and ultimately triumphed 16-14.

This result allows Mexico to compete for the fifth and sixth place against the Dominican Republic on Saturday in a match scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico and Chile will determine the seventh and eighth place in a match set for 10:00 a.m. local time.
