Cuba Secures Narrow Victory in Handball and Aims for Fifth Place Against Uruguay

The Cuban male's handball team defeated Mexico and is vying for fifth place at Santiago 2023 against Uruguay. Meanwhile, the North Americans will compete for seventh place against the Dominican Republic.

Friday, November 3rd, 2023.- The Cuban male's handball team achieved a close victory against Mexico with a score of 25-22, which has earned them a spot in the match for fourth and fifth place. On the horizon is a showdown with the Uruguayan team, who recently defeated the Dominican Republic.

In the match held at the Gimnasio Polideportivo de Viña del Mar, there was a tight Caribbean dominance in the first half, with a narrow lead of just one point (11-12). The pattern continued in the second half, but everything was ultimately decided by a 13-11 advantage for the islanders.

After the game, Cuban left back Frank Codiés shared his thoughts: "It was evident in the game we played, especially in the first half, that there were many inaccuracies. Mexico came out to give it their all and took advantage of that. We need to keep working and stay consistent, striving to improve every day."

"With Uruguay, we all know that we have some unfinished business from the first match. We'll go out there and give it our all. We'll try to do our best, and do everything in our power to secure the victory," stated the Cuban player.

This afternoon, the discipline's semifinals will take place: Brazil will face the United States at 5:30 p.m., and Argentina will go up against Chile at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, the match for seventh and eighth place between the Dominican Republic and Mexico will be held at 10:00 a.m. hours, followed by the clash between Uruguay and Cuba at 12:30 p.m. for fifth and sixth place.
