Brazilians Break Griskenas' Hegemony in Rhythmic Gymnastics

Maria Eduarda Alexandre and Barbara Domingos clinched first and second place in the individual hoop event, displacing the defending champion at the start of the decisive day of rhythmic gymnastics at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games

Friday, November 3rd, 2023.- With the popular support of more than two thousand spectators at the Centro de Deportes Colectivos at Estadio Nacional, Brazilian gymnasts Maria Eduarda Alexandre and Barbara Domingos were practically the home team as they secured the gold and silver in the hoop event, displacing the reigning monarch, American Evita Griskenas.

The South American representatives, with strong audience support, surprised the North American team with two flawless performances, allowing them to lead the individual apparatus standings with scores of 32.700 and 32.550.

Evita Griskenas, who participated in the last Olympic Games, couldn't replicate her performance from the previous Pan American Games and settled for the bronze medal with a score of 31.950. Meanwhile, her compatriot Lili Mizuno, who closed the final with a last chance for gold for the United States, incurred a penalty and had to settle for fourth place.

This way, Brazil begins the individual finals of rhythmic gymnastics in the best possible manner, which will be followed by the ball event and will decide the clubs and ribbon this Saturday.
