Thursday, November 2nd.- Chile's journey in male's basketball at Santiago 2023 came to an early end. Despite a 63-59 victory over Mexico, the obligation to win by a seven-point difference to advance to the next round took its toll at the Polideportivo 1 of the Estadio Nacional, sealing the farewell of the local team.
It was in the final quarter where the Chilean team managed to gain an advantage on the scoreboard. Despite both teams scoring few points, there was a slight lead in favor of Chile.
However, Mexico defended their basket with determination to avoid being eliminated from medal contention based on point difference, resulting in a loss that still allowed them to celebrate in Group B.
"We knew it would be tough. We wanted to win, but it didn't happen, but well, based on the point difference, we still managed to qualify for the semifinals. Chile is a great team, and playing at home, anyone can shine," said Israel Gutiérrez, a player on the Mexican team.
"Since 2011, Mexico had not reached a semifinal at the Pan American level, so we are happy with this achievement. For many, these are their first games, and it's important for them to gain this experience. Now, we will play our hearts out against Argentina for a medal," he added.
As a result, the semi-finals are set with Argentina facing Mexico on one side and Brazil taking on Venezuela on the other. The winners will compete for the gold, while the losers will battle for the bronze.
Chile, on the other hand, will have to settle for playing the fifth-place match against the Dominican Republic, while Panama and Puerto Rico will face off for the seventh place.
