The young Renan Correa soars with the gold in the 200 meters for Brazil

The 19-year-old athlete lived up to all the expectations surrounding him by finishing the double hectometer ahead of the Dominican Jose Gonzalez.

Thursday, November 2nd, 2023.- Renan Correa is 19 years old and he has become one of the great hopes of Brazilian athletics, a reputation he confirmed at Santiago 2023 in the 200 meters flat.

The Maringá native won the Pan American gold by finishing the race in 20.37 seconds, comfortably surpassing the Dominican athlete José González, who recorded a time of 20.56 seconds.

The athlete from Central America was seeking his second victory at this event after winning the 100 meters.

Nadale Janeil Buntin from Saint Kitts and Nevis, although born in the United States, completed the podium with a time of 20.79 seconds. This marks the first medal his country has achieved in these Pan American Games.

Behind them were the Canadian Callum Robinson (20.85 seconds), the Panamanian Alonso Edward (21.01 seconds), the Trinidadian Kyle Greaux (21.32 seconds), the Jamaican Michael Sharp (21.35 seconds), and the Guyanese Emanuel Archibald (21.38 seconds).

Correa adds this achievement to the Sub 20 South American record he set in Cuiabá (20.12 seconds), the gold in the 100 meters at the 2023 Youth South American Championships in Bogotá, and the semifinals he reached at the recent World Championships in Budapest.

In the Colombian event, he achieved a time of 10.01 seconds for the 100 meters, just one-hundredth of a second below the Brazilian record set 36 years ago by Robson da Silva.
