The US dominates fencing, continues to add gold medals at Santiago 2023

The American team secured the gold medal in the male's team sword and the female's team fleuret categories. The North American squad now has a total of 88 gold medals at these Pan American Games.

Thursday, November 2nd, 2023.- The United States was the big winner this Thursday in the fencing event of Santiago 2023, adding two more gold medals at the Centro de Deportes Paralímpicos and increasing its lead at the top of the medal table.

The American team excelled in the male's team sword and the female's team fleuret categories, defeating their Canadian neighbors in both finals.

In the male's event, victory was secured with a close score of 42-41 after trailing for most of the relays. Curtis McDowald emerged as the key figure, equalizing the score over the nine rounds and ultimately securing the winning point in the tiebreaker.

Elated after the win, McDowald stated, "In our weaknesses, we managed to support and complement each other. We had three completely different styles and a very young midfield. We all came together and worked perfectly. Although we were a team that had never played together before, we knew we had good chemistry, and we worked very well all the time. We knew from the beginning it would be a good day."

In the female's team fleuret category, the victory was more comfortable with a score of 44-33 in favor of the Americans, capping a perfect day for the dominant leader of the medal table at Santiago 2023.

"We had a very strong and specific strategy. We talked extensively about it. I think we had a very positive day, there was a lot of energy today. We were cheering and supporting each other, so very happy to have achieved the gold medal," said Jacqueline Dubrovich, a member of the winning female's team.

With these two new gold medals, the United States continues to lead the overall standings in Santiago 2023 with a significant margin, boasting 88 gold medals and a total of 203 medals.
