Tuesday, October 31th, 2023.- The twelfth day of official competitions at the Pan American Games was marked as the day when the new sprint champions were revealed: Yunisleidy García from Cuba (11.36 seconds) and José Alnardo from the Dominican Republic (10.30 seconds), who claimed the gold medals in the female's and male's 100 meters, respectively.
Once again, athletics took the spotlight at Santiago 2023, with a large crowd in the stands at the Estadio Nacional and gold medals in the long jump (Colombian Arnovis Dalmero), decathlon (Chilean-Cuban Santiago Ford), and 5,000 meters (American Kasey Knevelbaard).
With the gold obtained in this last event, the United States remains firmly at the top of the medal table with 178 total medals, including 76 gold, 47 silver, and 55 bronze. They are followed by Brazil with 130 medals (37 gold, 52 silver, and 41 bronze), Canada with 106 medals (35 gold, 33 silver, and 38 bronze), Mexico with 90 medals (35 gold, 22 silver, and 33 bronze), and Colombia with 50 medals (15 gold, 10 silver, and 15 bronze).
Chile, which celebrated Ford's unexpected victory in the decathlon, rose to the seventh position with a total of 41 medals, including seven gold, 19 silver, and 15 bronze.
