The United States celebrates two new gold medals thanks to fencing

In male fleuret, the champion was Nick Itkin, while in female sabre, Magda Skarbonkiewicz prevailed.

Tuesday, October 31th, 2023.- The United States extended its lead in the medal table at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, with fencing playing a significant role in this success. In this European-origin sport, the North American giant triumphed in male fleuret and female sabre.

In the male fleuret final, the champion was the American Nick Itkin, who convincingly defeated his compatriot Miles Chamley-Watson with a score of 14-6. The victor leveraged his track record, as he had previously won the Olympic bronze in Tokyo in the same discipline, but in the team event.

The last battle of the evening at the Centro de Deportes Paralímpicos at Estadio Nacional was between the American representatives Magda Skarbonkiewicz and Maia Chamberlain, with the former prevailing 15-13 in just two periods.

The bronze medals in male fleuret were awarded to the Argentinian Augusto Servello (who lost 15-4 in the semi-final against Nick Itkin) and the Brazilian Guilherme Amaral (who was defeated 15-9 by Miles Chamley-Watson in the semis).

In female sabre, the third-place finishes went to the Mexican Julieta Toledo (who was defeated in the semis by Maia Chamberlain with a score of 15-7) and the Cuban Leidis Veranes, who was narrowly defeated 15-14 by the American Magda Skarbonkiewicz.

The excitement of fencing will continue on Wednesday with the female sword and male sabre events.
