Tuesday, October 31th, 2023.- On Tuesday, American Kasey Knevelbaard became the winner of the gold medal in the men's 5,000 meters, held at Estadio Nacional in Santiago.
The North American athlete benefited from the disqualification of Mexican Fernando Martínez, who had initially crossed the finish line first, but only by a few centimeters.
However, he was disqualified, primarily for obstructing a competitor.
The gold medalist completed the race in 14'47''69 after a late surge since he had been in secondary positions for much of the race.
With just two laps remaining, he, along with Martínez, attacked the American Emannuel Bor, who had been the leader until then and was the top favorite, considering he had the best season time of all participants in the event.
Consequently, the silver medal went to Canadian Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, with a time of 14'48''02. The Quebec native also competes in the 2,000, 3,000, and 1,500 meters, an event in which he secured his qualification for Paris 2024.
Finally, the bronze medal was awarded to Brazilian Altobeli da Silva, with a time of 14'48''18.
