Squash: Pan American Champions start with victories

American Amanda Sobby and Peruvian Diego Elías, gold medalists in Lima 2019, successfully began the defense of their titles and advanced to the quarter-finals. All the Chilean players lost in their debut matches.

Tuesday, October 31th, 2023.- The squash competition at Santiago 2023 began with victories for the current Pan American champions at the Centro Deportivo de las Raquetas del Estadio Nacional. In contrast, all the Chilean players lost in their debut matches.

In the female's category, the gold medalist from Lima 2019, American Amanda Sobby, had no trouble advancing to the quarter-finals with a dominant victory over Margot Prow from Barbados, with scores of 11-2, 11-3, and 11-3.

In the male's category, the top two seeded players are the gold and silver medalists from Lima, Peruvian Diego Elías and Colombian Miguel Rodríguez, respectively. Both had no trouble in their opening matches.

Elías, who also holds the second position in the world rankings, defeated Chile's Matías Lacroix with scores of 11-1, 11-2, and 11-0. Rodríguez overcame Josué Enríquez from the Athletes Independent team with scores of 11-1, 11-2, and 11-3.

Apart from Lacroix, two other Chilean players participated in the individual competition. In the male's category, José Tomás Gallegos lost to the Mexican César Salazar with scores of 11-5, 11-5, and 11-8. In the women's category, Giselle Delgado was defeated by the Canadian Nicole Bunyan with scores of 11-6, 11-2, and 11-13.

The individual squash competition will continue with the quarter-finals on Tuesday evening, and the semi-finals and final will be played on Wednesday.
