Tuesday, October 31th, 2023.- Chilean athlete Nicolás Burgos confirmed his medal prospects in the singles table tennis event at Santiago 2023 by defeating one of the Brazilian Olympic players, Vitor Ishiy, in a five-set match. He will also face Ishiy in the male's doubles semifinals later in the day at the Pan American Games.
The local standout took advantage of a very inconsistent performance from the Paulista player to secure a solid victory, facing some challenges only in the second set. In the end, the Chilean secured his spot in the quarter-finals with game scores of 11-6, 4-11, 13-11, 11-7, and 11-5.
Burgos will compete for a place in the singles semi-finals starting at 5:30 p.m., but before that, he will once again cross paths with Ishiy in the doubles category. The Chilean, along with Gustavo Gómez, will aim to secure a spot in the final against the Brazilian duo of Vitor Ishiy and Hugo Calderano, with their match scheduled for 2:10 p.m. at the Centro de Entrenamiento Olímpico in Ñuñoa.
Vega Prepares for Historic Doubles Match
At the start of the day, American player Amy Wang, the recent Pan American champion, defeated Chilean athlete Paulina Vega in four sets (11-5, 12-10, 11-8, and 11-5) to advance to the quarter-finals. "It was a tough match. It wasn't easy, but she's a very smart player who quickly adapts to changes. There was very little room for error on my part."
This match served as a prelude to the female's doubles event, where Vega, alongside Daniela Ortega, will face Wang and Rachel Sung at 1:20 p.m., competing for a spot in the final. "I tried to focus on her right side, experimenting with different serves for the doubles match," added the 39-year-old Chilean.
