Chile makes a winning debut in the male’s singles table tennis

Local players Gustavo Gómez and Nicolás Burgos advanced to the round of 32 in the male's singles table tennis event.

Monday, October 30th, 2023.- Table tennis continues its development at the Pan American Games in the Centro Nacional de Entrenamiento Olímpico in Ñuñoa, where the male's singles tournament began on Monday.

Two athletes who represented Chile well were Gustavo Gómez and Nicolás Burgos, both of whom won their respective round of 32 matches and advanced to the next stage of the competition.

Gómez had a triumphant debut, winning with scores of 11-9, 8-11, 11-3, 11-8, and 11-7 against El Salvador's Diego Orantes, while Burgos defeated Mexico's Rogelio Castro with scores of 11-8, 11-4, 8-11, 11-7, and 11-7.

Happy after his victory, Gustavo Gómez stated, "Debuting is always challenging. It was my first singles match, which is quite different from doubles. I had to calibrate gradually, and I felt pretty good, to be honest. I'm pleased to give the win to the fans because their support was helpful. Now, I will face Alberto Miño from Ecuador. He is a strong opponent, and we have played each other many times. We have exchanged victories, and the last time I won. These matches are always tough."

In the round of 16, Nicolás Burgos will face Brazil's Vitor Ishiy on Tuesday at 10:50 a.m. local time, while Gustavo Gómez will do the same against Ecuador's Alberto Miño starting at 12:30 p.m. local time.
