Lucas Nervi secures Chile's first gold in athletics

The discus thrower secured an unprecedented Pan American title in this discipline with a mark of 63.39 meters. It's the sixth gold medal for the home team.

Monday, October 30th, 2023.- Chilean Lucas Nervi achieved a historic gold medal in the discus throw, with a spectacular performance in which he defeated formidable rivals, including the South American record holder, Colombian Mauricio Alexander Ortega, who took the silver, and the reigning Pan American champion, Jamaican Fedrick Dacres, who secured the bronze.

The local athlete threw 63.39 meters, his best mark of the year, to claim the gold medal, while Ortega recorded 61.86 meters, and Dacres reached 61.25.

Nervi, a 22-year-old, achieved the best mark in the youth world championships in 2022 and has now brought joy to Chile by securing this unprecedented medal in discus throwing.

After his last attempt, when he already knew the medal was his, he celebrated enthusiastically alongside the large crowd that gathered at the Coliseo del Estadio Nacional, which supported him in each of his throws. His celebration even took him into the stands, an action that earned him a yellow card from the judges.

At that point, a minor penalty meant little to him. Nothing and no one could spoil a perfect night, in which he gave his country the sixth gold medal they had been waiting for since six days ago when male coxless four rowing secured their victory.
