Peru takes gold in female's 10,000 meters

The long-distance runner Luz Mery Rojas led the distance event with a time of 33:12.99.

Monday, October 30th, 2023.- Peru's representative, Luz Mery Rojas, secured the gold medal in the Pan American women's 10,000 meters, completing the race in a time of 33:12.99 on the track at the National Stadium.

The silver medal went to Mexican athlete Laura Galván, who recorded a time of 33:15.85, while the bronze was earned by Ednah Kurgat from the United States, with a time of 33:16.61.

The strong race pace set by the Peruvian runner left her competitors with little room to challenge, especially in the final stretch when she took the lead, surpassing her compatriot Lizaida Valdivia and Mexican Galván, who finished in second place.

Team Chile's representative, Giselle Álvarez, finished in seventh place with a time of 34:01.07.

Athletics is one of the sports with Olympic qualifying standards that contribute to the ranking for the Paris 2024 Olympics. In this regard, the female's 10,000 meters race has a minimum qualifying standard of 30:40.00, according to World Athletics Council.
