Fencing: Chilean Núñez advances to the semifinals and secures a bronze

In the male's individual epee event, Pablo Núñez reached the top four and will seek to advance to the final against the Brazilian Alexandre Pereira. The Venezuelan Rubén Limardo, who was the Olympic champion in London, was eliminated.

Monday, October 30th, 2023.- On the first day of the Pan American fencing competition, the Chilean Pablo Núñez advanced to the semifinals in the male's individual epee event, securing a bronze medal (there is no match for the third place). His opponent in the semifinals, whom he must defeat to contend for gold or silver, is the Brazilian Alexandre Pereira de Camargo.

Meanwhile, the experienced Venezuelan Rubén Limardo, who was the Olympic champion at London 2012, was eliminated in the round of sixteen (eighth-finals).

At the Centro de Deportes Paralímpicos at the Estadio Nacional, Núñez had an almost perfect day. In the group stage, he finished first with four matches won and only one lost. Then, in the round of sixteen, he defeated his compatriot Jorge Valderrama, and in the quarterfinals, he overcame the Brazilian Fabrizio Lazzarotto.

On the other hand, Limardo won three matches and lost two in the group stage, and in the round of sixteen, he was defeated by the American Curtis McDowald. Moreover, his brother Francisco did make it to the semifinals and will seek to advance to the final against the Canadian Dylan French.

Regarding the other Chilean competitors, Joaquín Bustos was defeated in the quarterfinals by the Canadian Dylan French, while Jorge Valderrama lost in the round of sixteen to Núñez.

Today, the female foil event is also being contested, in which the Chilean competitors Katina Proestakis and Arantza Inostroza were eliminated in the round of sixteen and quarterfinals, respectively.
