Chile secures three medals in Table Tennis

The local doubles teams are in the semi-finals of the female, male, and mixed events, securing the bronze.

Sunday, October 29, 2023.- The Chilean table tennis doubles teams added three more medals to Team Chile after reaching the semi-finals in the male, female, and mixed doubles events, ensuring a bronze medal as they advanced to this stage.

In the mixed doubles, Paulina Vega and Nicolás Burgos defeated Puerto Rico (Brian Afanador-Adriana Díaz) 4-2, so they will face Cuba (Daniel Fonseca-Jorge Campos) in the semi-finals on October 30th at 10:00 a.m. local time. Cuba advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Argentina (Horacio Cifuentes-Camila Arguelles) 4-3 in the quarterfinals.

"It was a perfect match. Nicolás and I played very well. Adriana Díaz is the best player in this competition, with the highest ranking and a lot of experience, but fortunately, we managed to counter her and win the match," commented Paulina Vega.

In the other mixed doubles matches, Brazil (Bruna Takahashi-Vitor Ishi) defeated the United States 4-1 (Jishan Liang-Ann Zhang), and Canada (Zhen Wang-Mo Shang) won 4-3 against Mexico (Marcos Madrid-Yadira Silva). Brazil and Canada will play the semi-finals on October 30th at 10:00 a.m. local time.

In the female’s doubles, Paulina Vega, alongside Daniela Ortega, defeated Mexico (Clio Barcenas-Arantxa Cossio) 4-3, while Brazil (Giulia Takahashi-Bruna Takahashi) won 4-2 against Cuba (Estela Crespo-Daniela Fonseca).

"We are absorbing this medal; the support I received from Paulina was crucial. This victory feels different to us because we are at home, with all the support from the fans. It was spectacular," said Daniela Ortega.

Puerto Rico (Adriana Díaz-Melani Díaz) defeated the Team of Independent Athletes (Mabelyn Enriquez-Lucía Cordero) 4-0, and the United States (Amy Wang-Rachel Sung) won 4-0 against Venezuela (Camila Obando-Roxy González).

Finally, in male's doubles, the Chilean pair of Gustavo Gómez and Nicolás Burgos won 4-0 against Peru (Rodrigo Hidalgo-Carlos Fernández) and will now compete against Brazil on Tuesday, October 31st.

"We knew that Peru would be a tough opponent; they always give us a good match. But we were in good form and played solidly. We're happy with how we performed and complemented each other. Now, we're going all out against Brazil," said a delighted Gustavo Gómez.

In the other matches, Cuba (Jorge Campos-Andy Pereira) defeated Puerto Rico (Daniel González-Brian Afanador) 3-1, Brazil (Hugo Marinho-Vitor Ishiy) won 4-2 against Canada (Simeon Martin-Edward Ly), and Argentina (Horacio Cifuentes-Gastón Alto) overcame Ecuador (Alberto Miño-Emiliano Riofrío) with a score of 4-2.
