Argentina wins bronze and makes history in female basketball

The Argentinian team defeated the Cubans 75-66 and secured a Pan American medal, something unprecedented in their country's female basketball.

Sunday, october 29nd, 2023.- The Argentinian female basketball team concluded their participation at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games with a remarkable victory, defeating Cuba 75-66. This victory allowed the Argentinian players to win the Pan American bronze medal, a historic achievement in female basketball for their country.

Despite Argentina's previous loss to Cuba in the group stage, they appeared much stronger in this medal match. They began building their victory from the first quarter (23-12). In the second quarter, Cuba fought back and won 18-16. But in the third quarter, Argentina regrouped. With an inspired performance by Camila Suárez, they extended their lead, closing the set with a 19-16 advantage. In the final quarter, Cuba won again (20-17), but Argentina's lead had already secured the victory.

"It feels beautiful; we are very happy. This is a beautiful group of people who achieved something we had never accomplished at the Pan American level. I contributed my bit to the team, and we were able to achieve something historic for Argentine female basketball," said a delighted Camila Suárez, who scored 27 points and provided four assists in this bronze medal match.

With the gold medal yet to be decided (Brazil vs. Colombia), the final standings in female basketball were as follows: Argentina (3rd), Cuba (4th), Venezuela (5th), Chile (6th), Puerto Rico (7th), and Mexico (8th).
