Argentina Closes Group Stage of Field Hockey with the Tournament's Biggest Rout

The Albiceleste national squad overwhelmed Peru with a 22-0 score, securing an undefeated run in Group A and underscoring their status as medal contenders

Sunday, october 29nd, 2023.- The Argentinian national team defeated Peru 22-0 in their last match of the male's field hockey group stage at the Pan American Games, solidifying their status as heavy favorites for the gold medal and the consequent qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The ten-time champions of the continental event achieved the most lopsided victory of the tournament against the Peruvian team, securing an unbeaten path to the top four in the tournament.

Argentina dominated the match from start to finish at the Estadio Nacional and took an impressive 11-0 lead after the first half.

Far from slowing down, the Argentinian players continued to score during the second half, leaving the Peruvian team without any chance.

The top scorer of the match was Tomás Domene, who found the back of the net eight times, with four of his goals coming from short corners.

Now, Argentina awaits their opponent in the semifinals, which will be determined by the outcome of the match between Brazil and the United States later on this Sunday.

"We are here with the goal of Olympic qualification. We are already thinking about the semifinals. I believe that Chile is the toughest opponent we have in these Games," said the Argentinian captain, Maico Casella, after the match, hinting at a possible showdown with the host nation.
