Sunday, October 29, 2023.- Regarding the issues presented at the Polideportivo de Viña del Mar precinct, venue of Pan American Handball, we inform that the competition will continue today, starting at 1:00 p.m.

During the night and this morning, repairs have been made to the gymnasium’s roof to prevent water leakage onto the playing surface.

Regarding the statements made by the President of the Handball Federation, the Santiago 2023 Corporation would like to clarify, categorically, that it has no responsibility whatsoever for the poor quality and imperfections in the venue’s roof. This is because, as established in the contract signed on September 20th, 2023, between the Municipality of Viña del Mar and the Corporation, in its sixth chapter:

“On the other hand, the Municipality of Viña del Mar is obliged to carry out the refurbishment works of the Polideportivo detailed below within the deadlines established by themselves in the Gantt Chart sent from the Secretary of Planning SECPLA, guaranteeing the completion of the works before the start of the Pan American Games Santiago 2023. Among the obligations and commitments assumed by the Municipality are:

- Repairing of the roof of the venue, mainly rainwater leaks. Carried out by the infrastructure department of the Municipality.”

In the same chapter, the contract specifies that within the framework of the agreement between the parties, the Corporation commits to carry out works and improvements at the competition venues including: ramp repair and installation of handrails and universal accessibility baseboards; general repair of the changing room and FOP corridors; male, female, and accessible spectator bathrooms; athletes' changing rooms #1, #2, #3, and #4; and repair and refurbishment of the technical officials' room and bathrooms.

Consequently, the Municipality of Viña del Mar and its designated technical counterpart in the contract are exclusively responsible for the poor quality of the roof and the leaks generated by the rainfall of the last few hours.

We deeply regret the consequences that this issue has generated to the affected athletes and delegations. We are making every effort to solve this contingency and ensure the continuity of the competition.
