American Ashley Twichell Won Gold in the 10-kilometer Open Water Swimming

The United States swimmer dominated the race from start to finish. The podium was completed by Ana Marcela de Jesus Soares da Cunha and Viviane Eichelberger Jungblut, both from Brazil.

Sunday, october 29nd, 2023.- After a grueling race, Ashley Twichell claimed another gold for the United States after crossing the finish line at Laguna Los Morros with a time of 1:57:16.4. Twichell, who finished seventh in this event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, led the competition during the eight laps around the circuit.

The American athlete outpaced Ana Marcela Soares Da Cunha by 13 seconds, the reigning Olympic champion and a five-time world champion, which was a big surprise in this discipline at Santiago 2023.

"I am very happy to win this race in my first participation in Chile. The weather was tough with cold and rain, but I was prepared. I am very happy," said the 34-year-old champion Ashley Twichell.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian Ana Marcela de Jesus commented, "It was me against myself. Of course, I wanted to win the gold, but I am very happy with this result."

Elizabeth Biagoli of Argentina narrowly missed the podium, while the local representative, Mahina Valdivia, finished in 12th place.

The male's race with a total of 21 participants will take place at 2:30 p.m.
