Female’s Basketball: Venezuela defeated Chile and finished in fifth place

The Venezuelan team improved as the game progressed and established a significant lead in the third quarter against the local team, allowing them to secure fifth place at the Santiago 2023 competition.

Venezuela emerged victorious with a score of 79-70 against Chile at the Polideportivo 1 at the National Stadium, where the President of the host country of the Pan American Games, Gabriel Boric, attended.

It was undoubtedly a game that saw the winning team perform better as the match went on. Chile took the first quarter with a score of 20-16, while the second quarter ended in a tie at 17 points. The local team went into halftime with a slight advantage.

Once the game resumed, the Venezuelan team shook off their nerves and had a strong performance in the third quarter, outscoring their opponents 28-10. Despite Chile's efforts in the final stretch and a 23-18 score in their favor, they couldn't overcome the deficit.

The standout player for Venezuela was Mariana Durán, who scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds. In Chile, the best performance came from Fernanda Ovalle and Thiare García, both with 12 points.

It's worth noting that earlier in the day, Puerto Rico secured seventh place by defeating Mexico 75-70. On Saturday, female’s basketball action in Santiago 2023 continues with the semifinals between Cuba and Colombia (5:30 p.m.) and Brazil and Argentina (8:00 p.m.)
