Argentina advances to the field hockey semifinals

The "Leonas" defeated the United States 5-1, maintaining their unbeaten record at Santiago 2023.

Saturday, october 28nd, 2023.- With "doubles" from Sofía Tocallino and María José Granatto, along with another goal from María Delfina Thome, Argentina triumphed 5-1 over the United States in the second match of Group A in field hockey at Santiago 2023.

Daniela Grega scored the lone goal for the North Americans.

With this victory, the "Leonas" secured their place in the Pan American semifinals, accumulating six points after their uncompromising 8-0 win over Uruguay in their opening match.

After that win, Tocallino had warned that her team needed to stay focused if they wanted to confirm the favoritism they carry, and the clear victory over the United States confirms their determination to achieve qualification for Paris 2024, a spot reserved for the champion.

The next game for the Argentinian team will be on Monday at 09:30 a.m. against Trinidad and Tobago, who has suffered lopsided defeats in the Pan American Games (losing 15-0 to the United States on Thursday and 11-0 to Uruguay on Saturday), making them less likely to pose a significant challenge.

The defeat forces the North American team to defeat Uruguay in the closing match of the group phase if they aspire, at the very least, to repeat their bronze medal from Lima 2019 or aim to regain the gold they secured in Guadalajara 2011 and Toronto 2015.
