Team Chile: Grimalt cousins win bronze in beach volleyball

Competitions at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games are still in progress, and Team Chile continues to strive for more medals.

Friday, October 27.- In male's tennis, Tomás Barrios had to dig deep to defeat the representative from the Dominican Republic, Nick Hardt, in three sets (2-6/6-4/6-4) to advance to the semi-finals. Additionally, the Chilean tennis player could secure a direct spot in Paris 2024 if he reaches the final.

The Grimalt cousins, Esteban and Marco, secured the bronze in male's beach volleyball by defeating the United States duo, Logan Webber and Hagen Smith. In the female's version of this sport, the pair consisting of Francisca Rivas and Chris Vorpahl fell short in the match for the eighth place against the Puerto Rican duo of Allanis Navas and María Claudia González, in two sets (21-18/22-10).

Surfing, taking place at Playa Punta de Lobos in the Región de O’Higgins, offers hope for more medals for Team Chile. Rafael Cortez advanced to the semi-finals in the longboard category after defeating Julián Schweizer, the silver medalist in Lima 2019, in the qualifying round. If he advances to the final next Monday, Cortez will compete for the gold on the same day. If he loses, he will settle for the bronze.

The female's field hockey team did not have a good day. La Roja fell to Argentina by 3-1 in a match valid for Group A, held at the Field Hockey Sports Center. Tomás Domene (2) and Maico Casella (1) scored for the Argentine team, and Juan Amoroso scored the consolation goal for the Chilean team. In their next match, Chile will face Mexico on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

In the male's doubles semi-finals in tennis, Tomás Barrios and Alejandro Tabilo defeated Rodrigo Crespo and Jesse Flores from Costa Rica in two sets (6-1 and 6-3). They will compete for the gold against the Brazilian duo of Gustavo Heide and Marcelo Demoliner on Saturday. However, the female's pair of Alexa Guarachi and Fernanda Labraña was less fortunate, as they were defeated by the Brazilian duo of Laura Pigossi and Luisa Stefani. The Chilean pair will also compete for the bronze medal against Argentina on Saturday.

In the closing match, the female's basketball team lost to Cuba by 68-48 in a match valid for Group A. The Chilean team will play for fifth place against Venezuela on Saturday, starting at 1:00 p.m.
