Surf: Gabriel Salazar and Estela López get eliminated in the repechage

Both local representatives were knocked out of the competition in the fourth and fifth qualifying rounds, respectively.

Friday, October 27, 2023.- Gabriel Salazar and Estela López were unable to advance to the final phase of surfing in the SUP surf male’s and female’s shortboard categories during the competition held at Playa Punta de Lobos in the Región de O’Higgins.

Early in the day, local athlete Estela López started with a loss to Costa Rican surfer Leilani McGonagle. However, she made a comeback and was able to defeat Peruvian Sol Aguirre in the repechage round. Nevertheless, in the fifth round of the repechage, she was eliminated by Canadian surfer Sanoa Dempfle-Olin.

Later, Chilean surfer Gabriel Salazar secured a victory against Mexican surfer Felipe Rodríguez in the SUP Surf male's category. But like López, the national representative faced the same fate and was knocked out in the fourth round of the repechage, this time against Canadian surfer Finn Spencer.

As a result, the only Chilean surfer still in the competition is Rafael Cortéz, who could potentially win a medal by reaching the semifinals in the longboard category on Monday.
