Mexico Falls Short of Baseball Final Despite Victory Over Brazil

The North American team defeated the South American squad 5-1, but it didn't suffice to advance to the final match, which will feature Brazil and Colombia. This means there will be an unprecedented Pan American champion.

Friday, october 27nd, 2023.- The Mexican baseball team achieved a resounding victory to close out the Super Round of baseball at Santiago 2023, prevailing 5-1 against Brazil. However, this win was insufficient to reach the final, and they will now contend for the bronze medal against Panama.

In the showdown, Brazil, who entered the match already qualified, will face Colombia, who defeated the Central Americans 2-1 earlier in the day.

The Caribbean team benefited from their superior average of runs scored and runs allowed.

In the match held this Friday evening at the Centro de Béisbol y Sóftbol in Cerrillos, the teams remained level after three innings.

Mexico took the lead in the following inning and forced Brazil to bring out their batters' best performances. Lucas Sakay equalized the score for Brazil before the end of the fourth inning.

With the score tied at 1-1, both squads adjusted their strategies. Mexico relied on strong hits from their batters, while Brazil emphasized speed on the base paths to successfully navigate the bases.

This approach allowed Mexico to establish a lead, scoring four runs in the sixth inning, which, combined with the point from the fourth inning, solidified the 5-1 victory.

Thus, the bronze medal will be contested between Mexico and Panama tomorrow, starting at 09:30, while Brazil and Colombia will compete for the gold at 15:00.

Regardless of the outcome of the title match, Pan American baseball will have a new champion. Among the two finalists, the Caribbean team has the better historical record, having finished third in Cali 1975.

Cuba leads the list of champions with 12 titles, followed by Canada with two, and the United States, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic with one each.
