Canada aims for a medal in hockey

The North American male's team narrowly defeated the United States 2-1 in Group B at Santiago 2023 and secured a spot in the semifinals.

Friday, october 27nd, 2023.- Canada proved stronger than the United States in their second male's field hockey match in Santiago 2023, winning 2-1 in Group B.

With this victory, the Canadians accumulated six points and secured their place in the medal hunt before their last group match, which will be against Trinidad and Tobago this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. local time.

Canada's goals against the United States, who will compete for qualification against Brazil at 5:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, were scored by Floris van Son and Gordon Johnston, while their opponents' lone goal came from a penalty stroke by Aki Kaeppeler.

Johnston, the Canadian team captain, stated after the victory, "I think the guys responded very well to the pressure, and we executed our game plan effectively. I'm very happy that we can take another step against Trinidad and Tobago, a team with many skills and strengths. We need to play disciplined and stay united in structure and follow the game plan. Our goal is to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics. That's the objective here, and every match we win is a step in that direction," concluded the Canadian.

In the late afternoon of Friday at the Pan American Games, male's field hockey action will continue with Group A. First, Mexico will face Peru starting at 5:30 p.m. local time, followed by Chile vs. Argentina at 7:30 p.m. at the Centro Deportivo de Hockey Césped, located at the Parque Deportivo Estadio Nacional.
