Puerto Rico turns the tide, defeats Cuba

After a slow start in the first quarter with a 16-point deficit, they built a hard-fought victory of 72-69, which kept their chances alive to advance to the semifinals.

Thursday, october 26nd, 2023.- In a closely contested and thrilling game, Puerto Rico defeated Cuba 72-69, keeping their hopes alive in Group A of female basketball at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

The Cuban team initially dominated without resistance at the Polideportivo 1 at Estadio Nacional. They won the first quarter 26-10 and went into halftime with a 42-27 lead, appearing to have a substantial advantage.

The recovery of the Puerto Rican team began in the third quarter, as they managed to narrow the gap to 57-47 heading into the final 10 minutes.

The final quarter belonged to the Puerto Rican players, as they turned the game around, winning the quarter 25-12 and the match 72-69.

Puerto Rico will conclude the group stage on Friday by facing Argentina at 5:30 p.m. local time, while Cuba will take on Chile at 8:00 p.m.

In the morning session of female's basketball in Group A, Brazil defeated Venezuela 94-47, and Colombia won 66-54 against Mexico. The last matches in this group will be Brazil vs. Colombia at 10:30 a.m, determining the top spot in the group, and Venezuela vs. Mexico at 1:00 p.m.

The top two countries from each group will advance to the semi-finals on Saturday, while the third and fourth-placed teams will compete for positions from fifth to eighth. The final is scheduled for this Sunday.
