Thursday, october 26nd, 2023.- Paraguay delivered a major surprise in female’s tennis at the Pan American Games, as Daniel Vallejo (447th) defeated Chile's top contender for a medal, Alejandro Tabilo, with scores of 4-6, 7-7 (6), and 7-5 in a match that lasted three hours and 17 minutes on the Court Central del Estadio Nacional.
The match was closely contested, with service breaks on both sides in the first set. However, Tabilo's effective first serve (80%) and a new break point allowed him to close out the first set with a score of 6-4.
In the second set, Vallejo maintained a good rhythm of play and, with three aces in his favor, along with unforced errors by the Chilean, took the match to a tiebreak, which he won 8-6.
In the third set, the Chilean broke serve early and led 4-2 with his service. However, the Paraguayan tennis player recovered the break and evened the match until the twelfth game, where he once again broke Tabilo's serve to close out the match with a convincing 7-5.
In the quarter-finals, the Paraguayan will face the Brazilian Gustavo Heide (202nd), who defeated the Canadian Justin Boulais (629th) with a double 6-3 score.
