Canada defeats Cuba in female field hockey, will face Chile

The Canadian representatives easily overcame the Cubans in the opening match of Group B.

Thursday, october 26nd, 2023.- Canada began its participation in Group B of female's field hockey with a resounding 7-1 victory over Cuba.

In an exciting match played at the Centro Deportivo de Hockey Césped at Estadio Nacional, the Canadian team benefited from the scoring prowess of Madison Thompson, who scored two field goals and one from a penalty corner.

The other goals for Canada were scored by Chloe Walton and Thora Rae, both of whom also netted a double.

"I'm happy with the teamwork we displayed today, and thanks to my teammates, I was able to score three goals," expressed Thompson, after her outstanding performance.

Regarding the match, she noted that "the first game is always the most challenging because of nerves, but we're satisfied with our good performance, especially since we'll be facing Chile next."

Looking ahead to the match against "Las Diablas”, Thompson pointed out that "Chile is a strong opponent that consistently plays well. It will be a tightly contested match between two strong teams."

This victory is crucial for Canada, and in the second match, they will face Chile on Saturday, October 28th at 7:30 p.m. local time.

Cuba's consolation goal in this match came in the final quarter and was scored by Yuraima Vera.
