Wednesday, October 25, 2023.- At Laguna de San Pedro de La Paz, Team Chile in rowing concluded it’s participation in the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago with a brilliant performance, contributing the most medals for the national team.
First, it was the turn of the Abraham sisters, Antonia and Melita, who competed in the final of the female’s double sculls, winning the silver medal. Subsequently, in the mixed 8+ race, the team consisting of Melita, Ignacio and Alfredo Abraham, Óscar Vásquez, Francisco Lapostol, Magdalena Nannig, Victoria Hostetter, and Isidora Soto also secured the silver medal.
In this way, the Abraham sisters became the Chilean athletes with the most medals in the Pan American Games, totaling eight, surpassing Felipe Miranda, who has seven medals in these competitions.
In swimming, Kristel Köbrich came very close to winning Pan American gold. Nonetheless, she shone in the 1500 meters freestyle and claimed the silver.
The historic swimmer, who spent her entire sports career in the Argentinian city of San Juan, finished second in her farewell from the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, in a dramatic final where she led for a significant portion of the race, even at one point having a four-second lead. However, a late surge by the United States representative, Rachel Stege, denied Köbrich the gold.
In beach volleyball, the Grimalt cousins secured their spot in the semifinals by defeating the Canadian duo in straight sets (23-21 and 21-18). With this victory, the pair who won gold in Lima 2019 advanced to the semifinals and will face Brazil tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
Finally, in female’s football, the Chilean national team suffered a setback, losing 3-1 to Mexico. La Roja took the lead thanks to a goal by Fernanda Pinilla, but the opposing team reacted and capitalized on two errors by Christiane Endler to secure the victory. Diana Ordóñez, Rebeca Bernal, and María Sánchez scored for Mexico.
