Tennis: Chile leaves Pan American gold vacant by losing in mixed doubles

The Guarachi-Lama duo succumbed to the Argentine pair composed of Martina Capurro (397th in the WTA ranking) and Facundo Díaz (469th) in an intense match.

Wednesday, October 25, 2023.- Chile left the Pan American gold medal in mixed doubles tennis vacant, which they had won in the 2019 Lima Games, after the defeat of the pair composed of Alexa Guarachi (69th in doubles in the WTA ranking) and Gonzalo Lama (991st in doubles in the ATP ranking).

The Chilean duo succumbed to their Argentine rivals, Martina Capurro (397th) and Facundo Díaz (469th), who prevailed with a score of 6-3, 6-7 (11), and 11-9 in the super tiebreak, in one hour and 58 minutes.

The match took place at the Court Central at Estadio Nacional, where Chile put up a great fight. The Argentinians took the first set with some ease, but the local team managed to level the match by winning the second set in a tiebreak.

As a result, the match had to go to a super tiebreak. In this stage, the match was closely contested, but Capurro-Díaz ultimately secured the victory for Argentina with a score of 11-9.

In another match played on the same court, the pair of Tomás Barrios (707th in doubles) and Alejandro Tabilo (848th) advanced to the quarter-finals of the male's doubles draw by defeating the Mexican pair of Alán Rubio (789th) and Ernesto Escobedo (unranked) with a score of 6-3, 6-2 in 59 minutes of play.

Finally, the Argentinian player Lourdes Carle (436th) defeated the Chilean Fernanda Labraña (754th) with a double score of 6-2 and advanced to the quarter-finals in the female's draw.
