Wednesday, October 25, 2023.- Colombia secured its sixth gold medal at the Pan American Games after Martha Bayona won the Keirin event at Velódromo de Peñalolén. As a result, Colombia moved up to the fifth position in the medal table, surpassing the host nation, Chile.
The silver medal went to Mexico, thanks to Luz Daniela Gaxiola, while the third place was claimed by Jamaican cyclist Dahlia Palmer. Local competitor Daniela Colilef finished in fourth place.
The Keirin is one of the most captivating events in track cycling, where competitors start by following a pacer on a motorbike who sets the pace until the last three laps, when the strategy for the final sprint begins.
Shortly before that, the women's team pursuit competition was decided, and Canada emerged victorious as Devaney Collier and Fiona Majendie defeated the Mexican team of Lizbeth Salazar and María Antonieta Gaxiola.
The winning Canadian team, which also included Kiara Lylyk and Catherine West, secured victory by a seven-second margin.
After the win, Lylyk commented, "It's my first year as an elite rider, and being able to race with these girls is the best. They called me at the last minute, and I'm very proud of this team."
The bronze medal went to Colombia, surpassing the United States.
