Canada claims gold in both male’s and female’s 200 meters individual medley

Wednesday, October 25, 2023.- Canada was the dominant force in the 200 meters individual medley on the closing day of swimming at Santiago 2023, securing gold medals in both the male’s and female's events.

In a packed Centro Acuático del Estadio Nacional , Sydney Pickrem won with a time of 2:09.04, setting a new Pan American Games record. The silver medal went to her compatriot Mary-Sophie Harvey (2:11.92), while the bronze was claimed by American swimmer Helen Noble (2:14.19).

The winner earned three medals in this edition of the continental event. She had previously celebrated victories in the 200 meters breaststroke and took third place in the 4x200 freestyle relay.

In the male’s event, the gold medal went to another Canadian, Finlay Knox, with a time of 1:58.74. The silver was awarded to American swimmer Arsenio Bustos (1:59.89), and the bronze went to Brazilian athlete Leonardo Coelho (2:00.58).

The victor finally reached the top of the podium in Santiago 2023. Until now, he had settled for third place in the 4x100 freestyle, 4x200 freestyle, and 4x100 mixed freestyle relay events.
