USA dominates in climbing and earns gold in female’s boulder, lead

Team USA's representative, Natalia Grossman, claimed the top spot at Parque Cerrillos. This also secures her place in Paris 2024.

Martes 24 de octubre de 2023.- Sport climbing continues to gain fans in Santiago 2023, as evidenced by the large crowd at the climbing wall in Parque Cerrillos, where they came to watch this debut discipline in the Pan American Games.

On Tuesday, the female’s combined climbing event, which includes four boulder walls, each worth up to 25 points, and lead climbing on a larger wall worth a maximum of 100 points, took place.

In the boulder event, the best performer was the American Natalia Grossman, who scored 84.3 points, followed by her compatriot Brooke Rabautou (69.4) and the Canadian Alannah Yip (64.7). Local climber Alejandra Contreras finished in seventh place (34.5).

In the lead climbing event, Rabautou was the standout with an almost perfect score of 96. Grossman finished second (88.1), and Anastasia Sanders from the USA was third (76.1). The Chilean Contreras placed sixth (57).

When both scores were combined, the gold medal went to Natalia Grossman, who achieved a total of 172.4 points, thereby qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics. This solidifies her country's dominance in climbing at Santiago 2023, as the USA also claimed first place in women's and men's speed climbing and men's boulder & lead climbing at these Pan American Games.

On Tuesday, Grossman was joined on the podium by Rabautou (165.4) and the Canadian Alannah Yip (128.7). The local climber, Alejandra Contreras, finished in fifth place (91.5).

The final day of competition at these Pan American Games experienced a slight delay of 30 minutes in the lead climbing event due to a power outage in the area where the venue is located.
