Brazil defends the gold in female's handball by defeating Paraguay

The Brazilian team prevailed 27-17 over Paraguay at the Gimnasio Polideportivo in Viña del Mar, starting the Pan American Games Santiago 2023 with a victory to defend the gold they achieved in Lima 2019.

Tuesday, October 24, 2023.- Female's handball at Santiago 2023 continues its development at the Gimnasio Polideportivo in Viña del Mar, with the reigning Pan American champions from Brazil defeating Paraguay 27-17 in their first match in Group B.

The gold medalists from Lima 2019 asserted their favoritism on Viña del Mar's ground, controlling the course of the game against an opponent that only showed occasional signs of resistance.

Tamires Araujo, a player on the Brazilian team, stated after the victory, "We played after a very long trip, and we are happy with our strong defense. We are here to be the best, to win the gold medal, which will be the result of our hard work."

On the other hand, Paraguayan player Ada Miskinich said, "I’m proud of the team. We all stepped up against a very tough opponent, and we didn't give up; we gave them a challenge. We've just started, and now we'll go all out in these Pan American Games."

In the afternoon, Group A will take the stage, with Argentina facing Puerto Rico at 17:30 hours, followed by the host team Chile playing against Canada at 20:00.

The handball tournament format consists of two groups of four teams, with only the top two teams advancing to compete for a medal, while the remaining teams will compete to determine their ranking from fifth to eighth place.

It's important to note that handball at the Pan American Games Santiago 2023 provides qualification spots for the Olympics Paris 2024.
