Historic: Chilean quartet, two-time pan American rowing champion with gold

Alfredo and Ignacio Abraham, Nahuel Reyes, and Marcelo Poo clinched victory in the coxless four and placed Chile at the top of the discipline-specific medal chart in Santiago 2023.

Tuesday, October 24, 2023.- Chile had a morning filled with medals at the Laguna Grande in San Pedro de La Paz. Alfredo and Ignacio Abraham, Nahuel Reyes, and Marcelo Poo added a third gold medal to the host nation's rowing tally in Santiago 2023, narrowly defeating Cuba in the coxless four final.

The Chilean quartet initially dominated the competition and held their ground against the challenge posed by the Caribbean team of Andrey Barnet, Leduar Suárez, Carlos Ajete, and Reidy Cardona. Although the islanders briefly took the lead midway through the race, the host nation rallied to claim the gold medal by half a second.

The audience in the Biobío region cheered enthusiastically for the local champions, Alfredo and Ignacio Abraham, who earned their first continental title and confirmed Chile's strength in the sport after successfully defending the Pan American titles in the male and female coxless fours at Lima 2019.

With this achievement, Chile not only surged to the top of the specific rowing medal chart at the Pan American Games, with a total of seven medals and three golds but also secured an unexpected fifth place in the overall partial medal count, with five golds and a total of 19 medals.
