Double local surprise in Pan American badminton mixed doubles

The pair composed of Alonso Medel and Vania Díaz has advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will face the favored representatives from Canada.

Sunday, October, 22nd.- One of the racket sports grabbing attention at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago is badminton, which is taking place at the Centro de Entrenamiento Olímpico in the Ñuñoa commune. 

In the discipline, there was a significant surprise this Sunday. This was because the Chilean mixed doubles team, consisting of Alonso Medel and Vania Díaz, advanced to the quarterfinals. 

The local pair secured a clear victory against the Trinidad and Tobago duo of Chequeda de Boulet and Marc Marcano, defeating them with scores of 21-15 and 21-18 in a 31-minute match. 

Medel and Díaz will now compete for a spot in the semifinals on Monday, facing the strong favorites, Canadians Ty Lindeman and Josephine Wu, starting at 7:40 p.m. local time. Lindeman and Wu eliminated the Mexican duo Romina Fregoso and Luis Garrido, with scores of 21-7 and 21-11. 

In another notable match of the day, the current Pan American singles champion, Ygor Coelho de Oliveira of Brazil, defeated the Argentinian Nicolás Oliva 2-0 (21-17 and 21-15) and will now face the Mexican Luis Garrido.
