Santiago 2023: Cuba stands out thanks to boxing and baseball on the third day

On the day of the Pan American Games' opening ceremony, there was action in three sports, where the Caribbean country showcased its prowess in two of them. Additionally, Canadian Caeli McKay excelled at diving.

Friday, October 20, 2023.- Santiago 2023 is starting to take shape. The competitions began last Wednesday with the baseball game between the host country, Chile, and Mexico. In the lead-up to the grand opening ceremony held at Estadio Nacional this Friday, there was action in three sports.

The first discipline to hit the field was baseball, an event taking place at the Parque Bicentenario de Cerrillos with the match between 2 of Group B’s team: Cuba and Colombia. The victory went to the Cuban team, one of the contenders for a medal who secured a tight 4-3 win.

Next up was boxing, where once again a Cuban competitor stood out. In one of the featured bouts, Julio César La Cruz defeated American Jamar Talley 5-0 in the preliminary rounds of the 92-kilogram category.

In the same series, Colombian Andrés Hurtado won by the same score against the Dominican Daniel Guzmán. Tabakuo Aska from Antigua and Barbuda overcame the representative from Guyana, Emmanuel Pompey, with a score of 4-1.

Meanwhile, at the Centro Acuático del Estadio Nacional the diving competitions started with the 10-meter platform event. In the preliminaries, Canadian Caeli McKay excelled with a score of 343.95. Mexican Gabriela Agundez came in second with 333.75, and her compatriot Alejandra Orozco finished third with 320.10."
