With Panama's 4-1 victory over the Dominican Republic, a game in Group A, the men's Pan American baseball competition continued this morning. The tournament started yesterday at Parque Bicentenario de Cerrillos, in the southwest of Santiago, with Mexico's overwhelming 16-0 victory over Chile.
Following today's result, Panamanians and Mexicans share the lead in the quest for spots in the super round, where the top two teams from each group will continue to compete for the gold medal.
As expected, today's match was much more even than the opening game. Until the fifth inning, the score remained tied at 1-1, but in the sixth inning, the Panamanian team scored three runs, giving them a lead that the Dominicans couldn't overcome.
In Group B, at 3:00 PM today, Venezuela will face Brazil, while tomorrow, the first round will conclude with Cuba playing against Colombia.
Regarding Group A, the following games will be held on Saturday: the Dominican Republic against Mexico at 9:30 AM, and Chile against Panama at 3:00 PM.
Historically, the dominant force in Pan American baseball has been Cuba, with 12 gold medals. However, they haven't won gold medals since Rio de Janeiro 2007.
